1. Dog behavior can best be explained in dog terms.
Dogs can’t speak English and you can’t speak dog, so communication initially can be difficult. How often does your dog tilt his head to the side in confusion when you say something? 2. Undesirable behavior is a symptom of some underlying cause, not a problem in and of itself.
Let’s say your dog is barking incessantly. Dogs don’t generally randomly bark. They may bark to call the pack, or maybe you have encouraged them to bark without meaning to. You need to find out WHY the dog is barking and address the symptom. Often, undesirable behaviors can be changed by simple conditioning or behavioral modification. However, in many circumstances, if the impetus for the behavior has not changed, the problem will not resolve and symptoms will recur, or new ones will develop.

Remember that as descendants of wolves, dogs are instinctually pack animals. They are used to being in a pack or familial unit because this is how their needs get met.
